Description: This is a good example of an infantry armor known as a knechtisches harnasch which loosely translates as a “retainer’s armor”, a term which descends directly from the feudal system and the obligation of military service to the the feudal lord. The breastplate is of fine form with medial ridge and especially elegant lower projection termed a tapul in the 19th century. The form was introduced in about 1550 and generally fell out of favor after about 1575. The backplate, is constructed from a single piece and is line bordered matching the fauld (skirt plate) of the breastplate The helmet is of particularly fine form, made in one piece with lovely swept, roped comb. The principle edges are rolled and cabled. Similar examples are in many public collections including the Munich Zeughaus, The Royal Armories, Leeds, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and others. Arsenal armors such as this were, as a matter of economy of space, disassembled and stored as parts. Inevitably, reassembly involved some mixing of the parts. In this example, all elements, save for the tassets which are later, are of the same origin and period with minor repairs mostly during its working life. The leathers have been professionally restored. #206 German Armor C.1550-65, mounted as shown, including shipping to the contiguous 48 states. GC.113......22,800
