Description:
This is a wonderful English silver tea urn/hot water stand with superb quality decoration in the Rococo style, beautifully made of heavy gauge silver by the talented silversmiths at Smith, Tate, Hoult & Tate in the city of Sheffield. It rests upon a square base surrounded by a gadrooned border and is supported by four paw feet which are topped by lavish and exquisitely made scrolling decoration at each of the corners. The body of the urn has been attractively highlighted throughout with a series of swirling motifs which echo the gadrooning and effectively accentuate its aesthetically pleasing rounded silhouette. The gadroon work has been nicely repeated all around the upper border and also encircles the removable lid. It has all been interspersed with pretty shell motifs surrounded by scrolling forms to create a design that is both distinctive and charming. The spigot has a movable handle at the top which has been extensively decorated all over with lovely scrolling and plumed motifs which elegantly complement the borders. The two carrying handles have also been beautifully decorated in the same fashion to stunning effect. The lid has been stylishly crowned with a fabulous finial depicting a flower with its petals unfolding around a meticulously crafted central stamen. The craftsmanship throughout is of the very finest quality. When the lid is lifted, the hot water heater is revealed inside. To keep the water hot, a heated rod is placed inside the cylindrical insert and when the lid of the insert and the lid of the urn are both in place, the residual heat of the rod maintains the temperature of the water. In most cases these interior pieces are silver-plated, but as further proof of the superb quality of this item, all the components are sterling silver and are clearly marked as such. This is both unusual and desirable. The individual pieces (i.e. the urn, the lid, the inserts) are all fully hallmarked to show that they were made in Sheffield in 1820 by Smith, Tate, Hoult & Tate. This is a wonderful example of the finest quality silver from the Georgian period and is in excellent condition throughout with crisp, clear definition of all the decorative elements and a soft and pleasing patina. It measures approx. 17 " x approx. 14" x approx. 15" tall. It weighs an impressive 177 troy ounces.
