Description:
This luscious vintage platter dates from around 1950 and is signed MTJ by the Brazilian artist who painted it with a sprig of cherries so richly colored that you'll want to take a bite! The artist also applied a wash of soft green to create a broad band with a sun-dappled effect, shading darker green toward the edges.
Measuring 9 3/4 inches round, it's about 1 1/2 inches deep. Given so much depth, it forms a shallow bowl that will do a good job of containing whatever you serve on it -- even cherries and grapes that tend to roll. When not in use, it deserves display along with your other decorative plates and platters.
Crafted in Brazil, the platter is by Porcelana Schmidt -- a major maker there, still in business today. The mark bears the company's name, along with E. Catarina and a line of text that I can't make out (both because it's tiny and bound to be in Portugese).
The platter reached us from the estate of a family who lived in Panama during the mid-twentieth century and traveled widely in Central and South America. It's in lovely condition, showing only the stacking wear you'd expect on the rim of its base and slight edge wear in one spot, probably from a plate hook.
There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Thanks for looking!
