19thC. French Lantern –Ornate Repousse
Petite Table or hanging Hall Lantern- STUNNING!
This marvelous antique French lantern dates to the mid to late19th C. The piece is extremely decorative, with a wonderful motif executed in brass repousse. A handsome 6-sided lantern, it features an elegant form, with arched glass panes. Set upon a table with a candle, or installed and electrified, the elegant form and striking silhouette add a distinct French flair to any setting.
The 6 glass panes appear newly cut but with antique glass of the period. The effect is marvelous, the old rolled glass adding to the pieces charm even when the lantern is not illuminated. The old iron hanger is still attached, uniquely accented with an unusual brass and glass ornament (see photos). The iron hanger held in place with an old bolt.
The lantern is in very good condition; it has obvious signs of age and gentle wear. Originally access to the interior of this hanging lantern was via a hinged bottom, opening the round base, however in recent years the lantern has been used on a table for wide candle and the latch does not currently open. The circular glass pane that forms the bottom can also be removed if you wish to use the lantern as a hanging piece. The lantern has never been electrified.
The lantern (not including the iron hanger) measures approximately 22" tall x 9.5"across. Including the hanger, the lantern measures approximately: 37" tall.
