Description: This is a rare and unusual large French Faience Niderviller Figural Tureen made in France. The subject matter includes a large figural tureen in relief with lid having a finial styled as a pair of baby boys with bowl of fruit, a base with two large handles, and four claw type feet. The décor is a stylized pattern of scalloped relief pottery decorated with stunning flowers. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are wonderfully done with typical colors of this pottery: creamy white background decorated with plum red, sage green, bright cornflower blue, and brilliant lemon yellow. The insides, bottom, and the feet are glazed. The underside bottom is marked with entwined CC and a Crown in under glaze blue, the mark of Comte de Custine. Niderviller Faience was a famous art pottery technique whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied over modeled terra cotta clay forms, and fired several times in a kiln. Please note this is not Quimper nor Desvres, but Niderviller. Though similar, there are different color palettes used and other nuances on the potteries. Dimensions (in inches): 10.8 Tall X 12.2 Wide X 7.8 Deep. Weight 4 Lbs., 8.5 Oz. The date is circa 19th Century. The item is in very good condition other than minor wear, small glaze losses, and firing flaws; there have been no repairs or restorations. Shipping and Insurance USPS Priority Mail within the U.S. is $25.00. Thanks for bidding!
