Antique-cut Diamonds An early form of the modern brilliant developed by British and Dutch cutters, the Old European-cut diamond has a higher crown, or upper portion and smaller table (top facet). Contrary to popular belief these antique-cut diamonds often emit more sparkle and scintillation than today’s brilliants. The rose-cut diamond, which is covered with facets and has a flat base, originated in India in the 1500s. Rose diamonds were used by many 19th and early 20th century European jewelers as small sparkling accents to larger stones. Today, antique-cut diamonds are sought after for their rarity and beauty.
