Description:
A French mahogany "bonheur du jour" desk, ca. 1895, consisting of a superstructure sitting atop a table with a green leather insert. The superstructure has a central compartment with a door opening vertically and houses two inkwells with brass mounts, a graduated vertical letter holder, and a cascading brass penholder. An oval mirror in a brass frame adorns the central door. The central compartment is flanked on each side by two compartments, each with a horizontally-opening door, and each with a shelf. The table has a drawer on each side of the kneehole and sits atop a foundation structure of round wooden legs, all of equal diameter. The desk is richly decorated with brass ormolu in the French Empire style. The overall height is 46.75 inches, height of table 31 in., depth of table 20.25 in., and width of table 33.5 in. The dimensions of the superstructure are: height 16.25 in., width 30 in., depth 7 in. Very good condition. Shipping and insurance extra.
