Description:
Phenomenal 18K yellow gold brooch from the era of Emperor Napoleon III. The brooch features a shaded enamel portrait of the Madonna and Child copied from Raphael's "Madonna della Seggiola"--possibly the most famous of all the Renaissance paintings depicting Mary with the baby Jesus seated on her lap. The artistry in this enamel is simply breathtaking, making this one of the very finest religious enamels we've handled. The colors are vibrant and the details superb. The enamel is surrounded by a stippled background surrounded by an engraved border and ogee edge. The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp. The clasp is stamped with French "tête d'aigle" 18K gold hallmarks and an unidentified maker's mark.
Origin: France, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, all original, no enamel damage. Size: 1-1/8" diameter. Weight: 4.75 grams.
