Description: This is a very early flax hetchel, dating, most likely, from the 18th century and in a very rare form. The circular working part of the hetchel measures 6" in diameter and the overall length with the two handles is 30". The iron band is secured wirth rose head nails. In addition, the oak handles are decorated with a scratch carving. A somewhat related form is #1339 in George Newmann's book: "Early American Country Antique Furnishings".
