Description: Jim Daly was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, in 1940. He lived in several western states while growing up, where he had many experiences that he still uses for inspiration for many of his paintings. Daly always wanted to be an artist, even at a very young age, but when he was discharged from the Army in 1959, he had a growing family to support. So Daly got a job in the defense industry, but still kept his dreams alive by painting long into the night after work. Daly eventually enrolled in the Art Center College of Design and soon began selling his pieces at such a rate that he was able to finally quit his “day job” and concentrate on his artistic aspirations. Daly’s pleasant scenes involve the joy and wonder of childhood, something we can all remember and cherish. Norman Rockwell has always been a source of inspiration for Daly, both creating such scenes as to delight and relate to any audience. Now Daly has achieved a similar sort of recognition, with his Americana paintings being represented in many private and corporate collections, not to mention the numerous awards he has received. He has also sold at auction, which only adds to his already prolific career. This wonderful piece, by the extremely talented Jim Daly, is a print from 1979. The scene depicts a grandfather and grandson fishing together on a crisp autumn day with an energetic puppy. The trio has caught a fish and the excitement in the little boys face is absolutely priceless, which contrasts with the focused contentment of the old seasoned fisherman. It is very easy to get emotionally involved in such a heartwarming scene. Daly once stated that, “Emotion is probably the key to everything I do.” Daly has certainly outdone himself in that respect, as well as the way he captures every finite detail, from the tip of the fish’s tail to the whiskers of the grandpa. All of these details together create a picture perfect scene of realism that is difficult and time consuming to produce. And if that doesn’t warrant a closer look, the warm and inviting colors lure the viewer closer to share in the joyous moment that has been captured. It has been double matted in a top mat of rich cream and a bottom mat of a lovely russet tone, both of which very effectively set off the earthy hues found in the piece. The frame that was chosen is a beautiful deep brown wood that just completes the piece and highlights the dark tones, while also making the dimensions of this remarkable piece of art measure 17 ¾” x 14 ¾” in its entirety. Daly’s signature and the year can be seen in the lower left hand corner of the print. This piece is perfect for young and old alike, experienced fishermen or amateurs. This is an excellent buy for a piece of this magnitude, so don’t let it get away.
