Description:
Signed artist proof.
The FIDDLER was painted in the summer of 1974 and has been reproduced in numerous books of art. The painting was awarded the Gold Medal and Award of Merit in 1975 from the Society of Illustrators in New York. It was also selected for "200 Years of American Illustration," an international exhibition. This image was purchased by the Grateful Dead as the album cover image for Blues for Allah.
The FIDDLER exemplifies man's fear of death depicted with empathy--a juxtaposition of opposed elements. The paradoxical balance of lighter and darker forces, the Yin and the Yang, is at the very heart and source of this work. The robed figure laughs as he cries; death is animated by the music of life...
The size of the limited edition is 1500 + 50 artist's proofs, and 2 printer's proofs. These prints are all hand-signed and numbered. This is one of the artist's proofs. The 'state of the art' 1974 certificate of authenticity is actually done on photocopy paper.
