Description:
A fine classic among plastic purse collectibles ... This silvertone metal basketweave purse is a signature piece from well-known and highly sought-after handbag manufacturer Dorset-Rex. Designed in a bucket style, with squared sides, the purse sports alternating matte and polished woven metal slats, with a pearly gray marbleized lucite top and clear lucite handle. Though made in the 1950's, this very geometric piece boasts a decidedly Art Deco flair. The interior is fully lined in a peach-colored satin, with one pleated sidewall pocket. The bottom of the purse has four small, metal ball feet. Label: Original tag inside reads: Dorset-Rex Fifth Avenue." The bottom of the purse is stamped: "U.S. PAT 248683?." Dimensions: 8-1/2" wide x 7" tall {10-1/2" tall with handle} x 5-1/4" deep. Bottom measures 6-3/4" x 4". Condition: Very good to excellent vintage. Overall, the metal basketweave has a wonderful shine and polish, but does show age-appropriate surface scratches and some scuffs. The lucite lid and handle are in great shape, with no cracks, chips, or splits. The silvertone hardware, including the original latch, is also in fine shape and works perfectly. The interior lining is intact and shows very little wear, with no tears, shredding, or stains. Variations on this Dorset-Rex can be seen in the Dorset-Rex chapter in the sourcebook Plastic Handbags: Sculpture to Wear by Kate E. Dooner. Dorset-Rex bags are also featured in the Dorset-Rex chapter in Judith Miller's reference book Handbags.
