ARTIST
INFORMATION: Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
Marc
Chagall is recognized as one of the most significant and
critically acclaimed
artists of the 20th century. Chagall is a Russian-born French
painter, born July
7, 1887, in Vitsyebsk, Russia, was educated in art in Saint
Petersburg. In 1923,
he moved to France, where he spent the rest of his life, except
for a period of
residence in the United States from 1941 to 1948. During the
1930s, he traveled
to Palestine and Europe. In 1933, the Kunsthalle Basel held a
major
retrospective. During World War II, Chagall fled to the United
States. The
Museum of Modern Art, New York, gave him a retrospective in
1946 that was an
enormous success.
He settled
permanently in France and traveled widely, often in association
with large-scale
commissions he received including a ceiling for the Paris Opera,
murals for the
Metropolitan Opera House and more. Besides his paintings and
glass-windows for
Roman-Catholic cathedrals and Jewish synagogues, he created a
stunning plethora
of prints. Exhibitions of the artists work from 1967 to 1977 was
held at the
Museum du Louvre, Paris, in 1977. Chagall's unique distinctive
use of form,
shape and color is derived in part from Russian expressionism
and was influenced
by French cubism. Working with Mourlot & Sorlier in Paris,
Chagall returned to
France in1947, beginning new era for his printmaking. Chagall
died March 28,
1985, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Chagall?s works are highly
sought after by
museums and art collectors worldwide. Chagall is widely
considered as one of the
undisputed greatest artists of the 20th century.
