Description: Extremely rare American astronomical regulator clock by James W. Worn, Philadelphia, in its original Gothic revival cherrywood case. The drum head styled upper section contains its original 16" silver dial engraved James W. Worn, on the left side, in ornate script, and Philadelphia on the right side in block letters [see photo]. The drum head has twin curved glazed doors to access pendulum removal or adjustment. The silver dial has a large seconds beating dial above an even larger lower hours dial with the center shaft providing the sweep minutes at the outer edge of the sixteen inch diameter dial. There are twin heavily carved finials at either side of the drum head with a Gothic styled neck and waist section, all above the original stepped base. The pendulum appears to be of invar steel, with its large single glass jar of mercury. The original ornate spoked pulley and weight drops from the right side of the case [see photo]. The upper glass is original and held in by its original rope within. The waist glass is also original. James W. Worn was listed as a clockmaker / watchmaker at 172 [now 706] Chestnut St., in the Philadelphia City Directory in the 1840's. He was listed like this up to 1854. He moved in 1855 to 21 South Tenth St, but his home address was still 172 Chestnut St. He lived and work for the first six years out of the same place. Due to its styling, this clock can be dated from the late 1840's to the very early 1850's. Dimensions: Height 88", width 18", depth 13".
Status: For Sale Reference#: 3117
Condition: Fine original condition, all mechanics in working order, mercury pendulum contains its original mercury. Year: Circa 1840s.
