Description:
A knight in lustrous armor ... The Eagle Warriors or Eagle Knights were the elite of the Aztec army, charged with guarding the city of Tenochtitlan, center of Aztec culture and site of present-day Mexico City. Like the Jaguar Warriors, they were a special class of infantry soldier, special forces whose positions were restricted to nobility. Eagle Warriors' uniforms bespoke their military importance, comprised of magnificent eagle-head helmets and eagle feathers as adornments. They are a favorite motif in Mexican silver jewelry.
This outstanding brooch pendant is one of the most striking depictions of an Eagle Warrior that I have yet come across. Composed of silver, with remarkably luminous abalone and tortoise shell inlays, it portrays a proud and noble warrior in profile, dressed in full helmet, ear ornamentation, and feathered neck ruff. The warrior's features are truly extraordinary and lifelike, with a prominent nose, set jaw, and distinguished cleft chin. This is an impressive piece, both in design and dimension, and it boasts masterful cutwork and hand tooling that make it come vividly alive. It is fitted with a secure rollover clasp, as well as a large hidden bail, should you wish to wear it on a chain. Hallmarks: Partially worn away, but what can be read or discerned--BJ {inside circle}; HECHO EN MEXICO? {circle}. Dimensions: 2-5/16" wide x 2-9/16" tall. Condition: Fine vintage condition, with some stress fractures in the abalone, but no missing or unstable shell. The tortoise shell is in excellent condition. The silver shows some age appropriate surface scratches, but does not detract from the overall dramatic impact of the piece.
