Introduction by Lord Willoughby de Broke. First published 1838. ”This Thomas Smith was generally known as ‘the other Tom Smith’, in order to distinguish him from Thomas Assheton-Smith, (q.v.). He was Master of the Hambledon, the Craven and the Pytchley, and his Diary, published in 1838, includes a diagram of the ‘all-round-my- hat’ cast, which became so famous that it is usually known by his name. The late Lord Willoughby de Broke regarded the “Diary” as possibly the best text-book for foxhunters after Beckford. He also wrote: THE LIFE OF A FOX—BY HIMSELF,q.v., classified as Entertainment though a good deal can be learned from it, too.” – Daphne Moore, THE BOOK OF THE FOXHOUND, 1964. Covers and spine rubbed. Tips worn, and with moderate board exposure. Mr. Fretwell's bp on front fixed endpaper, Braxton B Sawyer stamp on each endpaper, gift-inscribed on front free endpaper, light to moderate foxing throughout, plates in nice condition.
