Description:
Late 20th. century mammoth tusk netsuke featuring Fukurokuju standing on a large basket, surrounded by 2 karako(one of them amusingly, pulling the beard of the longevity God). A monkey is also riding on the back of the God who holds a sprig with giant peaches, symbol of longevity. Signed on the bottom of the basket.
Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's collection of netsuke, the well-known author of the reference book: "Netsuke" and other reference books for collectors. The book is stressing the importance of collecting netsuke on base of their artistic merits and not on the signature of the artist. It is well known that the majority of netsuke carvings on the market that have the signature of a famous carver, are rather reproductions with a fake signature. Further more, the Japanese schools of carvers, had the tendency of allowing the pupils of famous carvers to sign with the signature of the master. Purchasing a netsuke bearing the signature of a famous netsukeshi, does not mean that the high price paid for a mediocre carving justifies its intrinsic value. Our netsuke are of the highest quality carvings of fossil mammoth tusk that is legal to trade and export without any limitations. As the fossil mammoth tusk has many cracks and small fissures that will detract from the quality of carving, our netsuke carvings are free of any fissures or defects and carved by master carvers.
