Description:
The provenance of this enchanting Late Victorian or Edwardian diamond engagement ring couldn't be clearer. I grew up next door to the couple who originally purchased it as an engagement ring and were in their 80s by the time I finished high school. In thanks for help during their declining years, my mother was given the ring. Because it was too small for her and a little too large for me, it hasn't been worn for many decades. Certainly the time has come for it to play a starring role in another love story.
The two swooping Art Nouveau loops that approach the central diamond from opposite directions with crescent cutouts above and below firmly date the ring to 1900-1910, when the so-called "cross-over style" was greatly in vogue. That would have been the period when my elderly neighbors married.
When the ring came into my possession, I had it professionally appraised by a certified gemologist (then the president of their national association) and he valued it at $2,525 - reflecting only the worth of intrinsic materials, no antique value. Such excellent antique jewels have appreciated tremendously over the past 15 years, as you know (and the price of diamonds has also climbed), but the unusual circumstances of my acquisition allow me to part with it at the old documented price (increased by only enough to cover the 10% commission payable on sales through this website). This figure is far below what comparable rings are selling for, elsewhere online.
That old appraisal estimates the largest diamond's weight at 0.61 carats and describes its form as transitional briliant cut. Fourteen single-cut diamonds add another .17 carats. The central diamond, BTW, was replaced circa 1940-50 with a more prismic stone than the original old rose cut, so this ring has a LOT of fire. In total, it tips the scales at 3.2 pennyweights.
At no charge, this wonderful jewel will be delivered by insured mail to any country where we ship. Gift wrap is also free when desired and layaway terms are available for all our items priced over $150. Thanks for looking!
