Description:
This is a fine pair of pierced sterling silver urns, elegantly decorated in the neo-Classical style and each fitted with a removable frosted glass insert. The base and upper rim of each urn has been neatly highlighted with a row of miniature beadwork while the bodies have each been formed from a pierced lattice-like pattern consisting of rows of vertical lines encircled by rows of horizontal bands punctuated by pierced circular motifs. This light and airy design effectively showcases and highlights the contrasting softness of the grey-white frosted glass inserts within. A wide upper border consists of an open work scrolling design flanked on each side by a ram's head. The heads all have nicely made horns which curve gracefully away from the faces and there is a large ring through each of the noses. The lids repeat the lattice pattern, complete with the wide scrolling border, and rise gracefully into a curving dome shape, each of which has been crowned with a finial in the shape of a luscious pear surrounded by leaves. The lids perfectly complement the urns and when they are in place to overall silhouette is extremely pleasing to the eye. There is no monogram or any sign of mono removal on the areas of plain silver, but the base of each piece has been expertly engraved with a small and delightful seated elephant, its trunk raised as a symbol of good luck. Both urns, and also the glass inserts, are in very good condition and the four ram's heads and the finials all have nicely detailed decoration. These charmingly decorative pieces are both pretty and practical and would perfectly accent almost any setting. Each measures approx. 5" in diameter at the widest point and stands approx. 13" tall to the top of the fruity finials. Dutch Circa 1915 Imported into England. Sterling Standard.
