Description: Beautifully engraved certificate from the Ensley Land Company issued in 1889. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of men working in a mine. This item is hand signed by the Company’s Vice President and Secretary and is over 113 years old.
Certificate Vignette 1887 East Birmingham Land Company, Bessemer and Birmingham Railroad Company, and Ensley Company began service 1890 Consolidation of private companies into the Birmingham Railway and Electric Company 1891 First electric streetcar began operation 1923 First rubber tired buses used to shuttle passengers between streetcar lines 1925 Birmingham Railway and Electric Company Streetcar system operated over 80 miles of track and carried 56 million revenue passengers 1940 Birmingham Electric Company, operating buses and streetcars over approximately the same area as the 1920 streetcar system, carried 48 million passengers 1948 Ridership reached an all time peak at 93 million passengers 1951 Birmingham Electric Company changed its name to Birmingham Transit Company 1971 Alabama State Legislature passed legislation permitting formation of transit authorities in the state 1972 Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority was formed
