Description:
This is a truly magnificent heavy gauge English sterling silver tray with beautifully decorated repousse handles and an elaborate repousse outer border, both in the neo-Classical style, together with an intricately etched central design motif, all exquisitely made to the very highest standards by the skilled silversmiths at the well-respected company of Mappin & Webb. The oval border has been masterfully crafted and consists of an intricate design of expressive Greco-Romano faces surrounded by grapes and leaves and positioned within circular forms together with urns overflowing with grape clusters and vines and flanked by pairs of very well made hounds wearing beaded harnesses. This extraordinarily detailed pattern has been artfully and attractively interspersed with fruit-filled cornucopia and more grapes and vine leaves scattered amongst the more dominant motifs. A narrow outer border frames this elaborate design with an elegant row of leaves and berries separated by diagonal ribbon forms. The carrying handles have each been embellished with a design of scrolling vine leaves on either side of an imposing bearded Bacchanalian head crowned with a shell-like form. The center of the tray has also been beautifully and elaborately decorated, this time using the technique of chased work. A lavish design of pretty garlands, swags and floral forms swirls elegantly around and between 4 separate winged creatures, each astride a perch surrounded by scrollwork, with wings unfurled to reveal double rows of beautifully crafted feathers. This design has been executed with exquisite precision and perfectly complements the exuberance of the outer border and handles. The tray is in perfect, pristine condition throughout and there is crispness and clarity of definition on all the exceptional decoration. The underside of the tray has been marked with the words Mappin & Webb Ltd, London, Sheffield and England. The front has been stamped with a clear set of English hallmarks showing that it was made in Sheffield in 1937. The initials M & W for Mappin & Webb can also be seen. This is a wonderful tray which would make a distinctive design statement in any setting. It measures approx. 14 " wide x approx. 22" long from handle to handle and weighs a substantial 74 troy ounces. Stock #: BD256 Price code: KZMS $11,000 Key words: Neo-Classical, Repous
