Description:
This is a magnificent, monumental Victorian silver 6-light figural candelabrum centerpiece made by the eminent London silversmith, Benjamin Smith. Incorporating elements of both the Rococco and Neo-Classical styles, it makes a bold and strikingly dramatic design statement and is a truly outstanding example of the art of English silversmithing at its superlative peak. Its central support column has been beautifully and imaginatively crafted as a pair of entwined oak trees, meticulously detailed with leaves and other organic forms in the Rococco style. The arms of the candelabrum extend outwards from the tree trunks, cleverly emulating the branches of a tree as they encircle the two trunks. The center of the column rises upwards and culminates in a cluster of leafy branches which serve as a support for a heavy gauge cut crystal bowl. The pretty bowl is removable, has a scalloped edge and has been decorated all around its circumference with a design incorporating multiple facets. Three lovely Neo-Classical female figures dressed in flowing Greco-Roman robes surround the base of the tree trunks, each representing one of the Virtues: Industry, Honor and Hope. Industry proffers a leafy branch in one hand and stands behind a beehive (denoting activity and hard work), while Honor stands sedately next to a small altar and holds a chalice in one hand. Hope stands next to an anchor, the ancient symbol of safety, holding a winged wand-like Caduceus in one hand which is topped by a hand incorporating the third eye, a representation of the Healing Hand of Fatima. They stand majestically on a raised platform strewn with assorted acorns and oak leaves. This extends upwards from the base which rests on 3 curving Rococco style shell-shaped feet. The lower border of the base has been effectively and elegantly embellished with openwork leaves and acorns, all of which have been skillfully and expertly made to the very highest standards. The areas above the shell feet have also been prettily enhanced by the addition of a design showcasing more scrolling leaves and foliage. Coats of arms have been applied to two of the three open areas between the shell feet; one a more elaborate form of the other and each featuring a winged gryphon and the motto "Labore, Robore, Spe" (Industry, Honor, Hope). The craftsmanship of this truly exceptional piece is of the very finest quality with every element meticulously and beautifully detailed to the very highest standards throughout. Everything is in excellent, pristine condition. The crystal on the bowl is clean and crisp and the patina of the silver is soft and pleasing, the textured surface of the tree-like forms and branches providing an effective contrast with the elegantly lovely figural forms and the smooth surfaces of the base. The base has been clearly stamped with a full set of English hallmarks (including Victoria's head) which show that it was made in London in 1848. The identifying mark of the maker, Benjamin Smith, is also present. This wonderful piece is truly one of a kind with its combination of superb craftsmanship and Victorian Symbolism and it would make a fabulous addition to any collection of museum quality silver. It would also make a distinctive and spectacular design statement in any setting. It measures approx. 14" at the base x approx. 20 " from branch to branch and stands approx. 33 " tall.
