Description:
This Victorian Horse Brass depicts the round turret of a castle - thought to be Windsor castle. A nice old one with the casting marks evident on the reverse side. The last photo shows it in a group of some of the others we have on the site. The leather straps would have been fed under the bar at the top and then stitched to a martingale. A great Christmas present! Horse Brasses were first used by farmers at agricultural exhibitions as decorative pieces on their draft horses' leather straps. Also used by breweries as a visual reminder to the wagon drivers of the different pubs and inns they need to make their deliveries. After the decline of the heavy horse as a working animal you'll find them most often used as decorative items in today's pubs.
