Description: This lovely English Georgian period bureau bookcase in walnut is believed to date from 1750-1780 and has elements of George II and George III design. It features carved classical fluted column pilasters ending in Corinthian capitals, a bonnet top with rosettes that feature hanging grapes, figured walnut front panels, original period glass, ogee bracket feet, and original hardware including working locks and key. Carcass is made of solid oak, which is used as well on the drawer bottoms. Fitted interior features cubby holes, two drawers and center door decorated in flame mahogany veneer. Embossed leather insert resides on the desk surface. Glazed door has a rectangular center panel joined by diagonals to four rectangular corner panels. Glass is wavy and either original or period. Bookcase has two shelves adjustable with wooden pegs. Some noticeable losses to the veneer along the front panels. Drawers show hand-cut dovetails of the highest quality. We have found no hallmarks. Measures 32" wide, 18.5" deep and 83.25" high. Rear panel of bookcase shows some discoloration from sun exposure. New steel screws secure the bookcase to the bureau, and there are some minor wood losses surrounding these four screw holes. Desk surface height is 28.5". Shelf dimensions are 27.25" wide and 7.5" deep. Available for pickup in mid-town Manhattan (New York NY 10016). Additional images gladly forwarded upon request.
