Description:
Attractive English Georgian ivory miniature portrait of a young handsome gentleman in a locket type case and dressed in clothes from around 1830, black suit and white shirt including a pin on his chest. The sky is in the background is beautifully painted. The cloud effect on this one is much better than normal, with signs of a sunset on the right. He is finely painted in a traditional manner. I think he is either American or British in origin. The condition is very good and the portrait is set into an oval gold engraved locket frame with rock crystal cover over the ivory. There are no cracks or evidence of repainting. It is painted on ivory. Portraits like this were often given as love tokens, but otherwise may be called mourning portraits. The sight size is 2 inches by 1 5/8 inches (52 mm by 41 mm).
