Description:
Antique French brooch, late 1700's to early 1800s, with pearls and turquoise. This fabulous brooch is in the shape of a sword and crown, and the pearls are fine. This style was extremely popular during the time of Napoleon and Josephine, when turquoise became quite popular. It comes with a certificate of value from a French jeweler, estimated at 14,000 francs (approx. $2500 USD). This is appraisal was done in 2000. There are 29 pearls as follows: 3 small pearls, 3mm 2 seed pearls, 4mm 4 tiny seed pearls, 3mm 20 very tiny pearls, and 12 turquoise stones. The gold is 18kt, and the work is very fine. The weight of this pin is 10.8 grams. The catch is a sliding barrel catch with a pin that runs vertically up the sword blade; there is a mechanism for holding a horizontal pin, but the pin itself was not placed as the original owner opted for the vertical fastener.
