Description:
Measuring 27” OAL, this fine half hull is constructed of mahogany and pine, in the traditional manner. It was built by J. Harkness, a master model-maker in Maine, probably about 1970. It was built from the lines of an existing vessel (see the station lines on the back) . A working builder’s model would have its lifts held together only by dowels or rectangular pegs, so that the lifts could be separated and traced for lofting into full-sized frames. This model is dowelled, and then glued, to avoid the almost inevitable slight, but unsightly, warping or shrinking of the lifts. There are a couple areas of slight (and repaired) damage. Under the counter, there is a filled gouge (see the photo), and there are 3 very small divots (for want of a better word) in the extreme bow, above the w/l , which have been repaired. The color and finish are excellent. This is a model of a traditional, full-keeled cruising sailboat, from the drawing board of a designer such as Captain Nat Herreschoff or John Alden. The design likely dates from the early 20th Century.
