Description:
This nautical combination bow light ( combining the red and green running lights with the white bow light, all of which are 3" in diameter) is of a design that is very unusual, and probably not very successful in its day, as almost no examples survive. Combination lights such as this are, and were, permitted on small vessels, but larger, separate navigation lights were required on larger vessels.
It was almost certainly made by Frederick Persky & Company, Lantern Manufacturers, (or its descendants) in about 1900. Mr. Persky, an immigrant in the late 1800’s, changed his name to Perkins, and after a short period in the employ of others, started Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation. Five generations later, PERKO, so named in the 1930’s, is still a privately owned, family operated corporation.
This combination light, even though not marked with the maker’s name, exhibits many of the subtle design touches that have survived in more modern Perko lanterns - the lighthouse-shaped exhaust vents, the latching method of the rear door, the shape of the brass weather-guards, etc.
The condition of this lantern is good, considering its age . The body is galvanized steel, with the expected oxidation of the zinc galvanization, but there is only a trace of surface rust showing through the zinc - and absolutely no rust-through anywhere. These galvanized running lights were meant to be painted for protection, and this is an example that was probably never painted, never used near salt water, and probably hasn’t been on a boat since Coolidge was president
The original kerosene burner is present, and in good shape. One of the hinges on the rear door needs to be re-fastened to the lamp, and the white bulls-eye bow lens is cracked, but that is the extent of the damage. I have very superficially cleaned the lantern, but, as the photos show, there are traces of soot and surface crud remaining. I have the feeling that a collector will want it relatively un-touched.
This is a very unusual nautical running light, seeking a stable, mature, loving antique boat. Object: marimony. (Oh, sea here…)
