Description:
This is an early silver Longines pocket watch, Swiss made around 1900. This watch is an example of one of the few attempts made by the English watch making industry to produce a machine made movement.
The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals, nice golden hands and an inner sunken second’s dial at the six.
The watch is lying in a silver 0.935 open faced case with a ribbed band. The back of the case is rubbed engine turned and is still monogram free for you to personalize this watch for yourself or for your friend. The inside of the case is marked for silver 0.935 and is numbered: 485752. This number can also be found on the inside of the silver 0.935 cuvette.
The Swiss made movement is something exceptional. Gilt half plate anchor fully jewelled movement, going barrel. The movement is top wind but there is also the possibility to use a key. This shows that this is a typical 1890 – 1900 watch, the changing period from key wind to top wind watches. The movement is signed: “Anti Magnetic, Longines Lever”. According to the book Pocket watches by Alan Shenton (pages 104-107), these were the first watches machine made.
Signed: Longines, Diameter: 49mm, circa: 1900.
Overall you are bidding on something with an historical value as this was of the first machine made watches.
