Description:
Early nineteenth century Massachusetts carved mahogany lyre clock attributed to David Wood, Newburyport with exceptional carved acanthus leaf bezel, waist section and base drop. The movement has the distinctive "beehive" shaped plates as can be seen in definite David Wood signed banjos or lyre clocks as pictured in Foley's, "Willard's Patent Time Pieces" as plates numbered 191,193 and 300. Weight and pendulum original, original covex glass, hands, etc..There is a faint shadowed signature of Aaron Willard, Boston which can only be seen at the correct angle in proper lighting. This clock was either sold by Aaron Willard or someone had the signature put on early in its life. It was either removed (leaving the shadowing) when someone realized it was a David Wood clock or just wore off over the years as many original signatures did. Clock in fine working order. Measures approx. 34" in height.
