Description:
Antique architectural style sculpture of Shiva (or Siva), known as the Lord of Dance. In this rendition, Shiva is shown standing under an altar with a mythical animal head on top of the arch. Shiva's headpiece also contains an animal head. Carried in two of Shiva's four hands are his weapon (a trident), and a Damru (small drum). One of the remaining hands is raised up near a snake and the other is down on his leg with the snake's body. The snake is wrapped around the back of Shiva's neck from one arm to the other and lying against one foot. (The use of snakes is said to symbolically represent Shiva's control over desire and sensuality.) One of Shiva's feet is poised above the head of a reclining dwarf and Shiva's other foot rests on the dwarf's back, subduing him. The dwarf is also shown holding a snake with both hands. The wood used for the carving is black with red grain. Condition: Overall very good condition. Marks: no signature or marks Date: Early 20th century Size/Weight: 9"H x 4-3/4"W x 1-1/2"D; 1.2 lbs.
