Description:
Measuring 45.5 inches by 20.5 inches by 42 inches high, this is a stunning piece of furniture. Curly, or tiger, maple is America’s premier furniture wood, and with good reason. The figuring of the wood, while irregular and random, finishes to display a range of contrasting tones that changes subtly with the light, and the angle of sight.

This is a beautifully proportioned and nicely-made sideboard. It is sound and solid structurally, and, though it has several small areas of repaired veneer, none is obtrusive. The “tiger stripes” in the drawers are particularly striking. The drawers are cockbeaded. The large lower drawer has its original working lock, and the upper left drawer has a secret lock, which would help to keep the kids out of your stash. Secret locks were often seen in furniture of this period, often due to the scarcity, and cost, of keyed locks.
Secondary woods are walnut, pine and poplar.
OK, we’ve covered the basics, let’s have the demerits: There is a large stain on the top, fortunately toward the back left corner. Modern chemistry can remove many kinds of stains in wood, but a stain caused by a leaky cast-iron oil lamp (which is what this appears to be) is indelible. This area is where you might place a lamp, a knife box, or a scarf, so it is not a total disaster. The drawer pulls are not original. The originals were wooden knobs. I could,if you like, re-install proper wooden knobs, and repair the small holes, which would be very hard to see against the figured drawer fronts.
As mentioned above, there are perhaps 6 areas, most of them small, where the figured veneer has been chipped. Fortunately, the largest of these are at the bottom of the chest, and the few at the top are very small. All have been repaired.
In summary, what we have here is an excellent, striking sideboard that is ready for your home or office. It was probably built in the 1850-80 time period, and has not been mistreated. Recently restored and refinished in our shop. Drawers work smoothly, doors close well, and everything is as it should be.
Our staff (actually, that’s sort of pretentious - we have one guy out back there doing all the heavy lifting, sniffing all those fumes and getting a little funny in the afternoons, but he does nice restoration work) aims to produce a finish that looks like a well-tended, 150-year-old finish, rather than that over-refinished, scraped-naked, open-pore glossy look so often seen. We rarely use any stain, so the color you see is the natural wood, just as it was years ago. And the best part is, that the color and finish will mellow and become more rich with time and careful use. Our finishes tend to get better and better with age , as the areas that are frequently touched acquire a nice, seemingly century-old, patina.
If you are in the Florida - Georgia area, there is a good possibility of delivery either free, or at a reduced rate, as we travel in that area frequently.
