Description:
This revised and enlarged edition of the book has been extended to include European items, as well as objects in iron, steel and copper, although brass remains the principal subject. Brass, unlike silver, has always been a working metal as well as a decorative one. Although its manufacture requires a high degree of skill, its components are base metals and it was never controlled by a system of hallmarking. Nevertheless, brass objects, especially those dating from the period between the Restoration and the early nineteenth century, are capable of manifesting some of the finest qualities of English design and craftsmanship. Whilst candlesticks and chandeliers are perhaps the most familiar of brass objects, the twenty-five colour plates and over 1,000 black and white illustrations reveal the huge range and variety of other items made in metal, encompassing all the necessities of domestic life from pap-boats to coffin plates. Domestic Metalwork 1640-1820 is essential reading for anyone with an interest in brass or the wider fields of metalwork and antiques.
