Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks
R. Michaelis The Book ------------------------------------------------------ Base-metal candlesticks those in brass, bronze, pewter and paktong rather than the valuable metals such as silver and gold, fall into a fascinating category of antiques. Everybody recognises them, they can still be bought, a large number of people collect them, but nobody knows very much about them. This is understandable for hardly anything of any substance has been written on candlesticks apart from a short learned paper delivered to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1926. This posthumous book is the first detailed account to record the development of the candlestick from the 13th to the 19th century. The author was a leading authority on metalwork (particularly pewter), gained from his long experience as a dealer, coupled with painstaking research particularly of candlesticks portrayed in contemporary paintings. He amassed a large collection of photographs of examples most of which he had personally examined.
The result is a key reference book particularly useful because of the carefully reasoned dating and evolution of the wide range of candlesticks discussed.
The authors masterly ability to explain his reasoning (which to those of us privileged to know him was particularly impressive) comes through so clearly in this book that there seems little doubt that it is destined to become the standard work on the subject.

The wide range of candlesticks discussed are carefully dated. This is an extremely lucid and masterly reasoned key reference book. It is destined to become the standard work on the subject. The Author -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The late Ronald Michaelis made an extensive study of the many branches of the history of metal work, though his name is best known as the countrys leading authority on pewter. His experience was gained not just as a scholar but by the practical experience gained from handling thousands of pieces as a dealer and collector. He was the author of Antique Pewter of the British Isles and several other books and wrote many articles for antique journals all over the world. Besides being President of the Pewter Society of Great Britain he also acted as its honorary librarian for over twenty years. In 1968 he was elected Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers and compiled both a list of the Companys collection and a short history.
His great knowledge of base metals is clearly demonstrated in this extremely lucid and well reasoned book. His collection of candlesticks was extensive and his ability to demonstrate how design evolved was fascinating. Specifications Size: 279 x 216 mm Pages: 140 Illustrations: 246 b&w
