One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** Dogs and I. By Major Harding Cox. New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1924. 290p., green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 74 B&w photographic illustrations. A memoir of a lifetime in the dog game with a description of many of the breeds. For a biographical sketch of Harding Cox see Kennel Gazette, September 1992, “Harding Cox” by Peggy Grayson, p. 26. Spine faded and gilt dulled. Mr. Fretwell's bp on front fixed endpaper. Front hinge weak. Foxing to preliminary and endpapers. Interior pages have some even age-toning, photographic plates are nice. VG condition.
