Description:
One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** Dogs: Their History and Development. By Edward C. Ash. London: Ernest Benn, 1927. 2 vols. xxxiv + 778p. 27 appendices, hundreds of illus. Index. 4th, original brown cloth, gilt lettering. “This is the classic work on the dog to date. Ash was a careful researcher who, unfortunately, did not always cite his sources… If anything, this work is over-inclusive.” – Herm David, Training Your Retriever, James Lamb Free, 1991, p. 329. “One of the many features is the only pub[lished] straight translations of Caius.” – Herm David, Catalog of the Cynological Library of Herm David, [q.v.] 1-1-65. “One of the most comprehensive works on Dogs ever published. The illustrations consist mainly of reproductions of old engravings, and build up the history of each breed of dog that the author has written so ably about, after many years of historical research.” - Gerald Massey, 1945. Covers have light wear and light rubbing. Tips bumped. Endpapers with some offsetting. Mr. Fretwell's bp on each front free endpaper. Front hinge of vol. 1 slightly weak. A little very light foxing mainly to endpages. VG++ condition.
