One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The Dog in Health and Disease. By Stonehenge. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1887. 4th ed. 432p., green and red cloth, gilt spine lettering, marbled edges and endpapers, 84 illustrations. Classic book on dogs, printed in a more concise form, with further alterations and additions. The first mention of Welsh, Scottish and Airedale Terriers, Pekingese, Basset Hounds and Japanese Spaniels. The Irish Wolfhound is now illustrated. Head of spine has tape repair, Boards have some edge wear. Hinges have tape reinforcement. Fontispiece/title page also have tape reinforcement. "Edward Fawcett" and date written neatly on front flyleaf, Braxton B. Sawyer stamp on front flyleaf, Mr. Fretwell's bp on rear endpaper, flyleaves have some foxing, the interior is in quite nice condition.
