Description: One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The Good Dog Book. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1924. 264p., dark blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, color illustrated pastedown on front cover, 5 illustrations in color by Gustav Tenggren, each chapter 1 head is illustrated. An anthology which includes Rab and His Friends by John Brown; The Bloodhound by Bryan Waller Procter (Barry Cornwall); A Dog of Flanders by Louise de la Ramee (“Ouida”); Chance by Henry Herbert Knibbs; Sticken by John Muir; Beth Gelert, or The Grave of the Greyhound by William Robert Spencer; Scally, The Story of a Perfect Gentleman by Ian Hay; The Vagabonds by John Townsend Trobridge; Adrift on an Ice-Pan by Wilfred Thomason Grenfell; Just Our Dog (anonymous) and Barry, the Dog Hero of the Saint Bernard Pass by Eva March Tappan. A Riverside Bookshelf book. Spine tail has a little shelf wear. Front pastedown is lighltly soiled. Mr. Fretwell's bp on front fixed endpaper. Interior lightly toned. VG+ condition.
