Description:
One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** A Dog Day or The Angel in the House. By Walter Emanuel. Pictured by Cecil Aldin. London: William Heinemann, 1902. 1st ed. Folio, 60p., illustrated boards. Illustrated by Cecil Aldin*, 1870-1935. 10” x 12-1/8” page size. A day in the life of the author’s dog – as seen through the dog’s eyes – and Aldin’s most successful book in terms of sales and longevity. See Heron, Roy. Cecil Aldin—The Story of a Sporting Artist, 1981, p. 51-53, for background. Boards have rubbed edges and tips, covers have darkened, cloth spine has some chips and loss at head, front hinge has separated, exposing the text block. Mr. Fretwell's bookplate on front fixed endpaper. Some occasional light foxing and light soiling internally. Good.
