Description:
Dockyard Model of the U.S.S. Cumberland as she appeared in 1862. The model measures approx. 44 inches from bowsprit to stern. It is 8 inches wide midship. From keel to top of highest mast stub is 24 inches. The model is mahogany plank on frame and is constructed to allow viewing the various deck levels. The bottom is covered with individual plates of copper tacked to the wood. The Cumberland was commissioned as a 50 gun Frigate in 1849 but was converted to a Sloop of War/Corvette in 1857. Though the Cumberland had a long and varied career, she was best remembered as the Union ship rammed and sunk by the C.S.S. Virginia (ex. U.S.S. Merrimack) off Hampton Roads in 1862. On the model, there is a dime sized circle scrolled on the fantail indicating the location of the pivot gun from which the skipper, Capt.Franklin Buchanan, reportedly fired the last salvo at the Virginia before he left his sinking ship.
