Canvas stretcher marks visible along edges recto. Abrasion and wear including minor losses to surface paint along all four edges of canvas, most likely caused by prior framing. A 1/8in. diameter loss to surface paint located 2in. from lower edge and 15in. from left side. Two minor nicks to surface paint along lower left side, approximately 1in. from left edge and 5in. from lower edge. Stable craquelure to surface paint along upper edge caused by canvas stretcher. Otherwise, good condition overall with no evidence of inpainting when examined under u.v. light. Artist's Biography:
Dion Pears (British, 1929-1985). Born on the 1st August 1929 at Richmond, Surrey, Dion Pears joined an artistic family. His mother was an interior designer, his father an artist. His grandfather was Charles Pears, the famous marine painter, who was president of the Society of Marine Artists. His first commission was to paint a Renault car that was famous for its success in the 1950 Monte Carlo Rally. From this humble beginning followed many requests for further work. Within months Pears was an established professional painter. Acknowledged as one of the worlds foremost motor artists, he was commissioned by many of motor racings celebrities such as Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham, John Surtees and the late Graham Hill. Pears had the ability to create a sense of movement in a painting and an almost intangible atmosphere of near photographic realism, very much a la mode with the motor racing set of the 1950s and 60s. AHowever, Pears was not purely a painter of things modern and high speed. Taking a leaf from his grandfathers book, his work also includes seascapes with barges, square riggers and all manner of ships, and his landscapes are also highly sought after by many people, including the television personality, Penelope Keith. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Society of Marine Artists. In his later years, Pears was unable to visit his subjects, as he suffered from agrophobia.
