Description: Copperplate, hand colored engraved map. This world map, first produced by Carel Allard in 1696, was later produced in the early eighteenth century by Schenk, Zurner, Homann and Seutter. This example is by Seutter. Allard's map, and thus Seutter's, did away with the decorative borders of earlier generations of Dutch mapmakers. Instead, the twin spherical hemispheres are surrounded by eight smaller projections depicting the world from various angles, and four smaller diagrams. The dark cross-hatching provides a striking visual effect.
