Description: This stunning chest of drawers measures 39 inches by 20 inches by 43 inches high, and dates from the mid-1800’s. It is structurally sound (I was going to say ‘as a dollar,’ but these days, this is not a valid comparison, sad to say.) The figuring of the two major woods, book matched crotch mahogany and curly maple, are dramatic, and complement each other nicely. The delicately-shaped skirt sets the chest off beautifully.

There are, of course, some demerits, though thankfully minor. There are a few small discolorations in the top, a few dings here and there, and the drawer pulls are not original, though faithful to the period. Modern, though hardly visible, casters are a later addition also. At some time in the dim past, the case has been invisibly reinforced, which I guess is really not a demerit .

On the plus side, this chest is visually striking. The drawers are graduated in height, and the proportions are excellent. The colors and finish are lovely, and the design itself is unusual. This chest was probably commissioned by a person of some substance, and it is unlikely that you will ever see its duplicate.

Our staff (actually, that’s sort of pretentious - we have one guy out back there doing all the heavy lifting, sniffing all those fumes and getting a little funny in the afternoons, but he does nice restoration work) aims to produce a finish that looks like a well-tended, 150-year-old finish, rather than that over-refinished, scraped-naked, open-pore glossy look so often seen. We rarely use any stain, so the color you see is the natural wood, just as it was years ago. And the best part is, that the color and finish will mellow and become more rich with time and careful use. Our finishes tend to get better and better with age , as the areas that are frequently touched acquire a nice, seemingly century-old, patina.

If you are in the Florida - Georgia area, there is a good possibility of delivery either free, or at a reduced rate, as we travel in that area frequently.
