Description:
Decorative Plant and Flower Studies by Jeannie Foord, 1901. J Foord was a painter of plants and flowers, which have been much praised. After a previously published book received favorable attention, she published this book which, in certain respects, was considered more successful. It was originally intended for use by artists, designers, students and others, (and later editions include this list of intended in the title) they can easily be enjoyed on their own for their aesthetic qualities. These studies were reproduced in color using a French stencil process. An article in a journal of the day stated: "Miss Foord, by patient and observant study from nature, has given us a very pleasing, new form of useful work, that has traits in common; with the illustrations to be found in the excellent botanical books of the beginning of the nineteenth century." An extract from the introductory note that appeared in a later edition of this book noted, "The author has made careful choice of the most beautiful features of the plant and rendered it simply and broadly in outline and flat tints. Her studies are to be trusted. They are drawn with care and exactness, and with a firm line there is no mistaking." And the Daily Telegraph noted, "Never before has the essential character of different plants received from the point of view of their adaptability for decorative purposes the careful study and brilliant representation which they receive at Miss Foord's hands in this exquisitely printed and coloured book."
