Description:
This is a very rare and beautiful Jugendstil, Art Nouveau
Cigarette Holder, circa 1900. Made by the finest craftsmanship.
On the two covers the cycle of life is depicted. A beautiful Art
Nouveau or Jugendstil woman with flowers to the left of her hair,
to her right is a Roman Hour Glass, representing the rapid
passing of time. While on the bottom right we see the bearded
Father Time. Youth, Beauty, Time and Age. The rapid moving of
time is depicted by the wind swept motif over the other images.
One can see the wind moving quickly over the scene of the three
objects. The detail of the engraving is excellent. On one side of
the cigarette case are the initials of the previous owner, while on
the other side there are no initials, but an open space. The
inside of the cigarette case was gold plated, which I understand
is normally used, in order to protect the silver from the tobacco
and it's products. The gold plating is almost worn off,
remaining in a few places. This beautiful object is 4 inches long
and approximately 3.35 inches wide. The inside cover is marked
with the word "Sterling". The maker of this very special case
marked it with a "Sword" and a letter "B" followed by the number
357. This number " 357" represents the Gold content from the
Gold Plating. The symbol of a sword with the B on it, is the same
marking used by R. Blackinton & Co. established in 1862 in the
town of Attleboro Mass, U.S.A.. It is an elegant accessory of an
elegant person. This is an object, which one could easily fall in
love with. A piece of Time, a piece of History, a piece of Art and
an object of Beauty. Enjoy the Art.
