Description: First edition ""Battles of the United States by Land and Sea: Embracing Those of the Revolutionary and Indian Wars, The War of 1812, and The Mexican War; With Important Official Documents"" by Henry B. Dawson. New York: Johnson, Fry, and Company: 1858. Two quarto hardcover volumes with brown Morocco boards and gilt lettering. Copiously illustrated with dramatic steel engravings by Alonzo Chappel from his own paintings, including frontis portraits of George Washington and General Winfield Scott. Dawson's exhaustively researched and vivid accounts of American military action through 1847 are accompanied by related military letters and dispatches and profiles of important officers. Volume I covers the American Revolution and Volume II details battles from 1790-1847. Born in England in 1821, Henry B. Dawson moved to New York with his family as a teenager. After an early career in publishing, Scott became a devoted historian, dedicated to challenging myths of American history. Preface reads in part: "".In the exercise of strict impartiality, the exact truth has been sought."" Volume I shows wear and tear to boards and foxing to flyleaves. Volume II shows warping and chipping to boards and library stamps to front matter. Scattered dampstaining to several pages. A rare lot in overall fair condition.
