Description:
Here is a fine example of early historical transferware. The pearlware plate is "Compton Verney, Warwickshire" by Enoch Wood, noted Staffordshire potter, and the impressed mark dates to 1818-1846. The plate is 8-3/4", and is part of the grapevine border series. The center scene is of the estate of the title. Compton Verney had a very long history in the Verney family, having first been constructed in the 15th century. It was re-built in 1711, and again in the 1760's, at which time the gardens were done by "Capability" Brown. In 1921, the ownership passed out of the hands of the Verney family, and the house deteriorated during the 20th century. In 1993, the property went into the Compton Verney House Trust. Restoration was undertaken, and an art gallery opened on the site. The scene shows the estate in the background, with a three-arched bridge, a couple in a small boat on the lake, and trees in the foreground. The transfer has been done in dark blue. The condition of the plate is excellent. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. There is no crazing, and no utensil marks. The glaze is bright and shiny. Eight shallow indentations are spaced evenly around the perimeter of the plate. This is a wonderful old plate of a significant estate and it will be a worthy addition to your transferware collection.
