Since the retrospective and exhibition of the art gallery 'Le Cave' in Paris, the expert in the field of painting, Daniel Lamy compared Daniel Rogier, an artist little known, with another great painter and personage of the impressionist style, Françoise Gustave Caillebotte. The lives of the two artists and their works, their centers of interest, similarities and differences.
Rogier, the son of a banker, was from the world of the wealthier, privileged class, like Caillebotte; he never had to work for a living. Both men dedicated themselves to the world of art and the study of its' tendencies and movements, refusing to compromise their ideals for commercial gain. From the beginning to end of his works, the influence of the Impressionist movement and style are visible; the representation of architecture and the forms of objects always strive to give a representation true to the visual and emotional reality of the scene. Rogier, like Caillebotte, used his art to serve as witness to the buildings, monuments, decoration and perspectives of the times, showing contemplation and application of techniques to reproduce the beauty of the populace and architecture in the scenes he painted.
Unlike Caillebotte, Daniel Rogier did not battle and work to establish himself or his art in the public awareness. He preferred to capture the world around him, never seeking to expose his work or establish a recognition of his talent or name. He chose instead to travel, paint and reserve his paintings in his private studio. He traveled extensively in Europe, both before and after World War II. The body of work displays a dreamlike beauty and if one notices the years that are missing (the war years) another story is easy to imagine. A self-taught artist, he was prolific and left a large body of work, composed of drawings, watercolors and oil paintings. His works show the same qualities of the grand masters from the great schools and academies of art.
In France, the public discovered this artists' work in the retrospectives presented by le Trianon in the years between 1990 and 2000. Calm atmospheres, repose and charm are eulogized in the works of Daniel Rogier, and the paintings available would grace any collection or setting.
