Description:
A tribe of over a quarter million people, the Dan reside in the western portion of the Ivory Coast into eastern Liberia in forestland in the south and savanah to the north. They are primarily farmers, sewing rice, cocoa, and coffee. Known for their festivals the women of the tribe take pride in the making and serving abundant food. The womans spoon is symbolic of her prowess. Although the human form is common among spoons, this spoon is unusual in that it is hermaphroditic with male genitals under a loin cloth and obvious vaginas above the loin cloth on the front of the spoon and on the back of the spoon bowl. Most likely this is symbolic of fertility and used for ceremonies regading fertility. Besides the loin cloth it is adorned with a waist band and anklet of glass beads. This sculpture is a step above most Dan spoons.
