Description: This c1914 photomechanical image on orig. mount board measures 37" x 12". With new acid free museum backing & over-mat it measures 40" x 14" .....The complete title reads: "Dixie's Field of the Cloth of Gold. The Nation's Billion Dollar Crop"..... This is a period image not a reproduction. It shows 1 in a series of panorama photographs made by J.C. Coovert recording cotton harvesting. Coovert became the most important visual interpreter of Memphis and the cotton South. He used a Cirkut Camera first introduced in 1905 which sat on a 15' tripot. He incorporated the same individuals in many different scenes often creating elaborate collages, all of which looked totally realistic. Many of the images were then hand-tinted but due to the fugitive characteristic of the tints, very few survived in their colorful form. As the viewer can see from my photos some of the faces & head scarves retain their original colors. The condition of the mount is in a sorry state but luckily does not infringe on the image itself. Having had a new mat cut with windows for the title & Cotton Merchant who used it as an advertisement, (I found this 1917-1918 entry on the internet: "E. P. Walker & Co. Members of New York Stock Exchange. COTTON FOR SPTXNERS, 82 Wall Street, New York" ), the viewer not in the know will be none the wiser. Nail impressions on the reverse tell us that the piece was originally framed. Other than the new mat, this is the way I found it. This Panorama is in the collection of "The Library of Congress". Copies of it are available for a fee. Please see their website. Their version shows a crease down the center, mine does not. Fully marked: CIRKUT PHOTO by COOVERT, MEMPHIS, TENN. USA. COPYRIGHT 1914 For extensive information re Coovert Cirkut photos as well as his complete body of work and bio please google "J.C. COOVERT, Photographer of the South".
